At the same time, the circulation of daily newspapers in India is also increasing. According to the 2015-2016 annual report of the Registrar of Newspapers in India (RNI), circulation of dailies grew about 25% over the previous year. The recent report from the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) of India, published in May 2017, also confirms the growth, though at about CAGR of 5% over the past 10 years.
This fourth edition of the South Asian Newspaper Directory reflects the growth seen in the industry. Compared to the first edition of the report, which was published in 2011, the number of editions and printing centres of newspapers in the directory has gone up, so has the list of printing machines and other equipment used in these organisations.
The use of press technology has seen a full circle since the first edition of this directory. From single width printing presses to high speed, double-width printing machines, this edition suggests publishers are adopting to distributed printing using both single and double-width presses depending on the geographic and operational convenience. It just goes to prove the quick
adoptability of Indian news publishers to the changing business environment and bodes well for the future of the industry in the region.
The directory lists both the management team members and the press, prepress and post press equipment used in leading newspaper companies in South Asia. It acts as a good barometer of the technology used in the industry in the region. WAN-IFRA plans to research the data further to cull out more industry trends from this directory.
